St. Francis Rebuilding the Church of San Damiano

At San Damiano, St. Francis first heard the call to “rebuild the church.” What began as mending stones became a spiritual mission—one of renewal and faith.

In this sculpture for St. Francis High School, Slatoff captures the moment of divine encounter, when Francis locks eyes with Christ on the cross. Hidden among the stones are animals he loved, and a cut olive tree sprouting new growth—a story of restoration and hope. The piece speaks to students standing at the start of their own journeys, reminding them that faith, like stone, is shaped by steady hands and a willing heart.
