St. Thomas More—English lawyer, scholar, and statesman—is remembered for his unwavering moral compass during one of history’s most turbulent political and religious shifts. When King Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church, More chose conscience over compliance, stepping down as Lord High Chancellor rather than sign an oath that betrayed his beliefs.
For this commission of St. Thomas More, Slatoff sought to capture the quiet strength of a man who would surrender position—and ultimately, his life—rather than compromise his integrity. In the sculpture, More has already removed his official collar, placing it on the railing beside him—a subtle yet powerful symbol of resignation. There is a deliberate ambiguity in the scene: is he on trial or delivering a sermon? The sculpture invites reflection on More’s courage, clarity of thought, and unshakable conviction in the face of injustice.
