One of three works created for the Fresno Sheriff’s Memorial, Grieving Mother and Child captures a defining moment that feels suspended in time—that instant of loss when life must move forward, yet the heart remains frozen in grief. Set within the memorial’s landscape of stone, olive trees, and flowing water, the piece offers a quiet space for reflection on love, resilience, and the personal cost of duty.
The mother is caught in a tender moment of sorrow, her focus entirely on protecting her young son. One hand rests on the folded flag, symbolizing her spouse’s sacrifice, while the other encircles the child protectively. The boy, poised between innocence and awareness, salutes with one hand while clutching his mother’s skirt with the other. Together, they embody enduring love and quiet strength—a deeply human presence at the heart of the memorial.
