Lion

One of three sculptures created by the Slatoff team for the Fresno Sheriff’s Memorial, Lion anchors the site as a powerful symbol of service, faith, and sacrifice. Set amid stone, olive trees, and flowing water, the figures harmonize with the memorial’s architecture, guiding visitors toward the Eternal Flame at its center. The lion’s presence sets a tone of strength and solemn reflection, marking the transition into sacred ground.

Inspired by the long tradition of guardian lions in tomb sculpture, the bronze figure embodies courage, vigilance, and protection. Though at rest, it remains alert—a steadfast sentinel watching over those who served. Positioned above the catafalque—the raised ornamental platform where the fallen are honored—the sculpture signifies “The End of Watch,” a timeless emblem of honor, duty, and the enduring spirit of law enforcement.
